About Suez

When the Suez Canal was built, it was made to be at sea level. It connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez while separating Africa and Asia. The canal is part of the Silk Road, which links Europe and Asia. A company called the Suez Canal Company was set up by Ferdinand de Lesseps in 1858 to build the canal. The canal was built from 1859 to 1869. On November 17, 1869, the canal was officially opened to the public for the first time. A direct route between the North Atlantic and northern Indian Oceans is available through the Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea. It avoids the South Atlantic and southern Indian Oceans, and it shortens the journey from the Arabian Sea to London by about 8,900 kilometres (5,500 miles), or 10 days at 20 knots (37 km/h; 23 mph) to 8 days at 24 knots (44 km/h; 28 mph). Canal: It runs from Port Said to the city of Suez, from the northern end to the southern end. When you add in its northern and southern access channels, its length is 193.30 km (120.11 mi). In 2020, more than 18,500 ships passed through the canal (an average of 51.5 per day). The original canal was a single-lane waterway that passed through the Ballah Bypass and the Great Bitter Lake. It didn't have any lock systems, according to Alois Negrelli's plans. Seawater could flow freely through it. When the water in the canal north of the Bitter Lakes flows north in the winter, it usually moves south in the summer. With the tide at Suez, the current moves south of the lakes and then moves north again. Until July 1956, the concessionary company that ran the Suez Canal was owned by European shareholders, mostly British and French. This led to the Suez Crisis of October–November 1956, when Egypt's President Gamal Abdel Nasser took over the concessionary company and nationalised it. Egypt owns and runs the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), which runs the canal and takes care of it. Convention: It can be used "in time of war as well as in peace, by every vessel for commerce or for war, with no difference in flag." As a naval short-cut and choke point, the canal has played an important military role. A lot of naval forces that have places on both the Mediterranean and Red Seas want to know about the Suez Canal. It took eight years for the Suez Canal to open again after Egypt shut it down at the start of Six-Day War. Work began in 2014 to expand and widen the Ballah Bypass for 35 km (22 miles) to speed up the canal's transit time. This will make the canal move more quickly. Expansion: It was meant to almost double how many ships could pass through the Suez Canal each day, from 49 to 97. At a cost of 59.4 billion Egyptian pounds (US$9 billion), this project was paid for with interest-bearing investment certificates that were only given to Egyptian businesses and individuals. This was called the "New Suez Canal." It opened on August 6, 2015. This was done by the Suez Canal Authority in 2016. One of the side channels that make up part of Suez Canal Extension East is on the northern side. It is used to dock and unload ships from East Terminal. People could not berth or unberth ships while convoys were moving through the canal, but now that a new side channel has been built, that has changed.
