Moselle Zip code
In the Vosges Mountains, there is a river called the Moselle. It starts in north-eastern France and flows through Luxembourg and France to reach western Germany. In Koblenz, it joins the Rhine on the left bank. A small part of Belgium is in its basin because it has the Sauer and the Our in it. This is what its lower course looks like. It twists and turns its way between Trier and Koblenz through one of Germany's most beautiful river valleys. In this part, the land to the north is the Eifel, which extends into Belgium. To the south is the Hunsruck, which is also in Belgium. The river runs through land that the Romans used to grow crops. There are now terraced vineyards on its hills, where "some of the best Rieslings grow." Many castle ruins can be found on the hills above the wine villages and towns on the slopes of the hills. Traben-Trarbach, with its art nouveau buildings, and Bernkastel-Kues, with its old market square, are two of the many places to visit on the Moselle river. The name Moselle is derived from the Celtic name form, Mosela, via the Latin Mosella, a diminutive form of Mosa, the Latin description of the Meuse, which used to flow parallel to the Moselle. That is why the Mosella was called the "Little Meuse." First, Tacitus wrote about the Moselle. He wrote about it in Book 13 of his Annals and in Book 4 of his History. He did this as far back as 4th century. The Roman poet Ausonius used it in his writing. It was written in 371 and was called Mosella. This poet of the Late Antiquity and a teacher at Trier's Imperial Court (Kaiserhof) wrote about a trip from Bingen to the Moselle and then to Trier on the Via Ausonius, a road named after him. In Ausonius's book, he talks about how the Romans made the land around the river and in its valley rich and flourishing thanks to their rules. When France became a republic, the river's name was changed to Moselle and Meurthe-et-Moselle.
