About Hrazdan

Hrazdan is a town and urban community in Armenia that serves as the administrative centre of Kotayk Province. It is about 45 kilometres (28 miles) northeast of the capital, Yerevan. As of the 2011 census, there are 41,875 people living in the town. It has lost a lot of people since the 1989 census said there were 59,000 people there. It was one of the most industrialised cities in the Armenian SSR during the Soviet era. There is a prelate in charge of the Diocese of Kotayk in the Armenian Apostolic Church. It is based in Hrazdan. The name of the town comes from the Hrazdan River, which runs through it from north to south. The name Hrazdan itself comes from the Middle-Persian name Frazdan, which is linked to Zoroastrianism. During a story about Goshtasb and two other people who wanted to kill him, the Avesta says that Frazdan is the name of a lake. Before they became Christians, Armenians were mostly Zoroastrian. Zoroastrian names were kept in the geography of Armenia.
