About Jermuk

In southern Armenia, the town of Jermuk is a mountain town and the centre of the Jermuk Municipality. It is 53 km (33 miles) east of the provincial capital, Yeghegnadzor. It was one of the most popular places to go for medical tourism in the Soviet Union. Jermuk is known for its hot springs and mineral water brands that are made in the town, so people visit often. It has a waterfall, man-made lakes, walking trails, forests, and mineral water pools that make it a good place to go. People in the town are working to make it into a modern centre for tourism and health care. It is also being set up to become a major chess centre, with a lot of international chess tournaments planned for the town. There were about 3,400 people living in the city of Jermuk in 2016. However, in 2011, the population of Jermuk was 5,572. Nearby towns such as Herher (pop. 706), Karmrashen (pop. 252), and Gndevaz (pop. 829) also belong to Jermuk as part of the municipality. The name of the town comes from the Armenian word "jermuk" or "jermook," which means "warm mineral spring." In Western Armenian, the word "chermoug" means "warm mineral spring." It was first mentioned in the 13th century by historian Stepanos Orbelian.
