In Barbados, there are eleven parishes. The parish of Saint Michael is one of them. 39 km2 (15 sq mi) of land area. It is in the southwest part of the island, near the coast. In 1629, Governor Sir William Tufton created six parishes. One of them was called St. Michael, and it has stayed that way. There is a big city in the parish called Bridgetown, which is the capital city of Barbados.
