Saint Michael Postal code
In Barbados, there are eleven parishes. The parish of Saint Michael is one of them. 39 km2 (15 sq mi) of land area. It is in the southwest part of the island, near the coast. In 1629, Governor Sir William Tufton created six parishes. One of them was called St. Michael, and it has stayed that way. There is a big city in the parish called Bridgetown, which is the capital city of Barbados. Bridgetown is the place where most business happens in Barbados, as well as the place where the public transportation system comes together. Another important thing in St. Michael is the Deep Water Harbour, which is the international sea port for Barbados. There are a lot of cruise ships that come and go, including ships from Royal Caribbean and Cunard. The harbour has a lot of sugar towers that can be used to load local sugar into transport ships, and a tower that can be used to load flour into transport ships. A bird's-eye view of Bridgetown. The Needham's Point Lighthouse is in Needham's Point, St. Michael, behind the new Hilton Barbados hotel that has just opened there. Under the vestry system that has been in place in Barbados for a long time, the main parish church (St. Michael's Cathedral) is in St. Michael's Row in Bridgetown. The cathedral replaced the old parish church that used to be on the site of St. Mary's Church, which is now a cathedral. Bishop Coleridge, who came to Barbados in 1825 to lead the new Diocese of Barbados and the Leeward Islands, made St. Michael's Cathedral a cathedral.
