About Espirito Santo
Espirito Federal is a state in the southeast of Brazil. In Vitoria, which is the capital, is the largest city. With a long coastline, the state is home to some of the countrys most important ports, and its beaches are big draws for tourists. Vitoria, the capital, is on an island that borders the municipalities of Vila Velha, Cariacica and Serra. Its in the middle of three other municipalities. These cities, as well as the cities of Fundo and Guarapari, make up the states main metro area. A popular tourist destination in the northern part of Esprito Santo is the town of Itainas. It is known for its sand dunes and forro tradition. The Captaincy of Esprito Santo was cut out of the Captaincy of Bahia in the 18th century, when the colonial rule of Brazil was in place. It was named after a 16th-century captaincy that covered the same area of coast. Following the 1815 elevation of Brazil to a constituent kingdom of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves, Esprito Santo was made a province. This was because the Portuguese Court moved to Brazil. After Brazil became an independent country in 1822, it became a province of the new Empire of Brazil. When Brazil became a republic in 1889, it became a state. In the early 20th century, the state symbols that are still used today were adopted. Esprito Santos name comes from the Christian Holy Ghost (also known as the Holy Spirit).
