About Isla De La Juventud

Island of Youth is the second-largest island in Cuba and the seventh-largest island in the West Indies, but it isn't big enough to be a country (after Cuba itself, Hispaniola, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, and Andros Island). When the island was called the Isle of Pines until 1978, it was called the Isle of Pines. At 2,200 km2 (850 sq mi), it covers an area the size of Texas. It is about 50 km (31 miles) from Cuba and across the Bay of Batabano from the island itself. Because the island isn't part of a province, the central government of Cuba runs it. It's 2,419 km2 (934 sq mi) and not part of a province, so it's run by the country as a whole. There is only one town on the island, which is called Isla de la Juventud, and it has the same name. An estimated 83,544 people live on the island, which is the largest of the 350 islands in the Canarreos Archipelago (Archipelago de los Canarreos) (in 2019). A city called Nueva Gerona is the capital and largest. The second-largest and oldest city is called Santa Fe in the middle and is also called Santa Fe. Columbia, La Demajagua (also known as Santa Barbara), Mac Kinley, Cuchilla Alta, Punta del Este, Sierra de Caballos, and Sierra de Casas are some of the other communities.
