Larnaca is a city on the southern coast of Cyprus. It is the capital of the district with the same name, and it is also the name of the district itself. There were 144,200 people living in the metro area of the city in 2015. It is the third-largest city in Cyprus, after Nicosia and Limassol. As well as its palm-tree seafront, Foinikoudes, the Church of Saint Lazarus, Hala Sultan Tekke and Kamares Aqueduct are some of the other things that make this city so great to go to! It was built on the site of the ancient city of Citium, where Zeno was born. The country's main airport, Larnaca International Airport, is in Larnaca, which is in the city. It also has a harbour and a sea port. Its name comes from the Greek word larnax, which means "coffer, box," "chest," "crystal urn," "coffin," "drinking trough," and "chalice." It's from this word that the name Larnaca came to be. Many larnakes (sarcophagi) have been found in the area, which may have led to the name. In the last quarter of the 19th century, the city's US consul said that he had found more than 3,000 tombs in the area around Larnaca. This is because there are so many sarcophagi in the modern town. In the local language, Larnaca is also called Scala because of the old port. During the Middle Ages, a small port-anchorage near Larnaca Bay was called "Scala di Saline." Other names that appear on maps include "Porto delle Salines," "Rada delle Saline," "Punta delle Salino," and "Golfo delle Saline."
