It is also the end of the 313-mile (504-km) Trans-Ecuadorian Pipeline, which comes from the oil fields in northeastern Ecuador. There are a lot of people from Esmeraldas in Latin America who have played for Ecuador's national football team in the past. It is a city that does a lot of commerce, industry, and farming. It has beautiful beaches with landscapes and a warm climate, which make it one of the most popular places for tourists to visit in the area. On March 27, 2022, a 5.8 Richter scale earthquake hit the city of Esmeraldas, shaking it to the core.
