This is where its name comes from, so the province is called Santa Elena. There is a town called Santa Elena in southwestern Ecuador. It is also the capital of both a province and a canton called Santa Elena. Santa Elena, which used to be called Sumpa, is on the Ecuadorian peninsula near the city of Guayaquil. It is thought to be the most important and well-documented archaeological site in the country, mostly because the Lovers of Sumpa were found there.
