About Alexandria
Alexandria is the third-largest city in Egypt after Cairo and Giza. It is also the ninth-largest city in Africa and a major economic centre. If you're from there, you'll call Alexandria the "Bride of the Mediterranean." This city is big enough to have a lot of people, and it's also big enough to have a lot of people living there. For about 40 km (25 miles) along the northern coast of Egypt, there is a city. Alexandria is a popular place to visit and an important place for business because of its natural gas and oil pipelines from Suez. Alexandria was built by Alexander the Great around 331 BC. It was built near an Egyptian city called Rhacotis, which was named after Alexander (that became the Egyptian quarter of the city). Alexandria grew quickly, becoming a major centre of Hellenic culture and taking over as the capital of Egypt when the Ptolemaic pharaohs took over after Alexander. When the Romans and the Eastern Romans (Byzantines) ruled Egypt for almost a millennium, it was the capital of the country. When the Muslims took Egypt in 641 AD, they moved the capital to Fustat (later absorbed into Cairo). There were three things that people thought of when they thought of Alexandria: the Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos) and the Great Library (the largest in ancient times). During much of the Hellenistic and late antiquity, Alexandria was a place where people learned about and shared ideas about the ancient Mediterranean. When it was first built, it was the largest city in the ancient world. Rome eventually took it over. Cities like Alexandria, Egypt, were important places for people to start learning about Christianity. They were also home to the Patriarchate of Alexandria, which was a major centre of Christianity in Eastern Roman Empire. Currently, the Coptic Orthodox Church and the Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria both claim to be descendants of the same people who lived in the past. By the time the Arabs took Egypt in 641 AD, the city had already been mostly looted and lost its significance. It didn't come back until the modern era. With easy access to the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, Alexandria became a major shipping centre and one of the world's most important trading centres. It also took advantage of Egyptian cotton's high price, which made it a good place to buy and sell.
