About Sohag
Upper Egypt governorate: Shj, also spelled Sawhj or Sohag. It is south of Asya and north of Qin. Ribbon-like, it is about 60 miles (100 km) long. It is in the Nile River valley, where there are many crops. With its flat bottom, the Nile flows through a valley about 13 miles (20 kilometres) across that is surrounded by limestone cliffs that rise almost 1,000 feet above the ground (305 metres). Nile has cut a channel close to the eastern side of the valley all over the area. This is where the water comes from. All the land that can be grown is west of the river. There are a lot of people in the Shj governorate's area that can be lived in. About three-quarters of the people who work are farmers. Cotton, millet, wheat, sugarcane, onions, peanuts, and melons are the main crops. Silk is made at the town of Akhmm in the province. Perennially irrigated land gets its water from the Al-Shjiyyah Canal, which is fed by the Naj ammd barrage to the south. It's near Akhmam that there are limestone quarries at Mount Al-ard and Al-swiyyah Sharq on the east side of the city. Abydos and Bayt Khallif, near the town of Shj, are two of the most important places in ancient Egypt. They both have monuments from the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms. People who like to visit Egypt can go to another place called the Coptic White Convent, which has an ancient temple from the 5th century. It's made of limestone, and it has many stones that have been used in other places in the past. The Red Convent, which also has a basilica church, is about 4 miles (6.5 km) to the north. Early and mediaeval Coptic schools have been rebuilt at both of these places, which are now open again. Besides Shj, the governorate's capital, the three main cities are Akhmam, Jirj, and at. Jirj has a sugar refinery. It was expanded in the early 1980s, and now it can process more sugar. This area is 597 square miles (1,547 square km). People in 2006: 3,746,377.
