About Copan

There is an archaeological site in western Honduras called Copan, which is a Maya city. It is close to the Guatemalan border. This Maya city looks just like the lush, well-watered mountain valley in western Honduras where it was built. It is at an elevation of 600 metres (2,400 feet) above mean sea level. People lived there from the 5th century AD to the 9th century AD. The city was in the extreme southeast of the Mesoamerican cultural region, on the border with the Isthmo-Colombian cultural region, and was almost entirely surrounded by people who were not Maya. This is where the city was. A lot of people lived in Copan for more than two thousand years, from the Early Preclassic to the Postclassic era The city made sculptures in a unique style that was similar to the lowland Maya, perhaps to show that the city's rulers were Maya. History: The city has a history that goes back to the beginning of the Classical era. Archaeologists and epigraphers have been able to recreate it in great detail. When Copan was a big city in the southern part of the Maya area, it ruled a huge kingdom. In AD 738, one of the most important kings in Copan's history, Uaxaclajuun Ub'aah K'awiil, was captured and killed by his former vassal, the king of Quirigua. This surprise defeat led to a 17-year break at the city. During this time, Copan may have been beaten by Quirigua in a turn of events. A large part of the eastern side of the acropolis was washed away by the Copan River. The river has since been diverted to keep the site safe from more damage. It is thought that the ancient name of Copan was Oxwitik, which means "Three Witiks," but the meaning of the word "witik" itself isn't clear.
