Westfjords Postal code
People live in the Westfjords or West Fjords, which is a large peninsula in northwestern Iceland and an administrative district. It is the least populous administrative district in the country. It is on the Denmark Strait, next to the east coast of Greenland, and it looks out over the water. If you go from Gilsfjorur to Bitrufjorur, you can get to the rest of Iceland by crossing a 7-km-wide "isthmus." The Westfjords are very mountainous. The coastline is very rocky, with a lot of fjords and steep hills around it. These indentations make roads hard to drive on and communication by land very difficult. Also, many of the roads are closed by ice and snow for many months of the year. The Vestfjaragong road tunnel, which opened in 1996, has made that situation better. The cliffs at Latrabjarg make up the longest bird cliff in the northern Atlantic Ocean. They are at the westernmost point of Iceland, which is why they are so important. A glacier called Drangajokull can be found in Iceland's north. It is the fifth-largest glacier in the country, but it is also the only one in the area.
