About Aceh

Aceh, which used to be called Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, is the northern and westernmost province-level division of Indonesia. It is at the end of the island of Sumatra. Banda Aceh is its capital and largest city. Aceh has been given a special status because it is a religiously conservative area. It is the only province in Indonesia that is legally following Sharia. There are ten indigenous groups in this area, the largest of which is the Acehnese people, who make up about 80% to 90% of the people in the area. As you can see, Aceh is where the spread of Islam in Indonesia began and was a big factor in how Islam spread across Southeast Asia. Islam first came to Aceh (the Kingdoms of Fansur and Lamuri) around 1250 AD, and it spread quickly. At some point in the early 17th century, the Sultanate of Aceh was the wealthiest state in the Malacca Straits region. It was also the most powerful and well-known. Aceh has a history of being politically independent and refusing to be controlled by outsiders, like the Dutch colonists who lived there before and the Indonesian government that came after them. Aceh has a lot of natural resources like oil and natural gas. During the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, Aceh was the closest point of land to the centre of it. This earthquake and tsunami caused a lot of damage to parts of Aceh's western coast. One hundred and seventy-one thousand people from Indonesia died or went missing in the disaster. The disaster led to a peace deal between the government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement, which was signed soon after (GAM).
