About Baghdad  City

Baghdad is the capital of Iraq and the Arab world's second biggest metropolis, after Cairo. Baghdad was constructed in the eighth century and became the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate and the Caliphate's most noteworthy major building project. It is located along the Tigris, between the remains of the ancient Akkadian city of Babylon and the ancient Sassanid Persian capital of Ctesiphon. Baghdad developed rapidly became an important cultural, economic, and intellectual hub of the Muslim world within a short period of time. This, along with the fact that the city is home to numerous significant academic institutions, notably the House of Wisdom, and a multiethnic and multireligious setting, has earned the city a global reputation as the "Center of Learning."
Baghdad was the world's biggest metropolis during most of the Abbasid period of the Islamic Golden Age, reaching a population of more than a million at its zenith. The city was completely devastated by the Mongol Empire in 1258, precipitating a fall that would last for centuries as a consequence of periodic plagues and many succeeding empires. Baghdad gradually recovered some of its previous significance as a key hub of Arab culture after Iraq was recognised as an independent state (formerly the British Mandate of Mesopotamia) in 1932, with a population of between 6 and 7 million. In comparison to its enormous population, it occupies a very little territory, measuring only 673 square kilometres .
The city has suffered significant infrastructure damage as a consequence of the Iraq Conflict, which lasted from 2003 to 2011, as well as the succeeding insurgency and then the renewed war, which lasted from 2013 to 2017, resulting in the loss of significant cultural and historical items. Baghdad had one of the highest rates of terrorist attacks in the world during this time period, although terrorist strikes have been infrequent after ISIL's territorial loss in Iraq in late 2017.
