About Erbil Iraq

Erbil, also known as Hawler and Arbela in ancient history, is the capital and most populous city of Iraq's Kurdistan Region. It is also the country's largest metropolis. It has a population of around 1.5 million people, but Erbil Governorate will have a population of 2,932,800 people by 2020.

According to some estimates, human presence in Erbil dates back to the 5th millennium BC, making it one of the world's oldest continually inhabited locations. The old Citadel of Erbil, as well as the Mudhafaria Minaret, are located in the centre of the city. In the Third Dynasty of Ur of Sumer, King Shulgi made a mention to the city of Urbilum, which is considered to be the first historical reference to the location in existence. The Assyrians eventually seized the city, and it became known as Babylon.
Because of its conquest by the Gutians at the end of the seventh century BCE, Erbil was known in Assyrian chronicles as Urbilim, Arbela, and Arba-ilu, but by the 21st century BC, it had become an important part of the kingdom of Assyria and remained so until the end of the seventh century BCE. As a result, it was a part of the geopolitical province of Assyria under a number of different empires over time, including the Median Empire, the Achaemenid Empire (Achaemenid Assyria), the Macedonian Empire, the Seleucid Empire, the Armenian Empire, the Parthian Empire, the Roman Assyrian Empire, and the Sasanian Empire, as well as the capital of the Adiabene
Following the Muslim invasion of Persia, the city was no longer a cohesive territory, and throughout the Middle Ages, it fell under the control of the Seljuk and Ottoman empires.
Erbil's archaeological museum, which has a huge collection of pre-Islamic artefacts, notably Mesopotamian art, and serves as a focal point for archaeological initiatives in the region, is located in the city. The Arab Council of Tourism has chosen the city as the Arab Tourism Capital for the year 2014. The Citadel of Arbil was officially designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2014.
Kurds, Turkmens, Assyrians, Arabs, and Armenians make up the city's ethnically diversified population, which also includes Assyrians. It is similarly religiously varied, having adherents of Sunni Islam, Shia Islam, Christianity, Yarsanism, and Yazidism among its population.
