About Sulaymaniyah

As-Sulaymaniyah (Arabic: as-Sulaymniyyah), also known as Slemani, is a city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, near the Iran–Iraq border. Sulaymaniyah is also known as Slemani in Kurdish. It is bordered by mountains in the northeast, including the Azmar, Goyzha, and Qaywan Mountains, as well as the Baranan Mountain in the south and the Tasluja Mountains in the west. Summers are extremely hot and dry, while winters are chilly and damp, resulting in a semi-arid climate.

Sulaymaniyah has long been a cradle of renowned poets, authors, historians, statesmen, scholars, and singers, like Nalî, Mahwi, and Piramerd, who lived there from its founding.

When the Kurdish prince Ibrahim Pasha Baban established the current city of Sulaymaniyah in 1784, he did it in honour of his father, Sulaiman Pasha, who had died in 1783. Sulaymaniyah was the capital of the mediaeval principality of Baban from 1784 until 1850, and it was the largest city in the region.
