Nagano Prefecture is a landlocked prefecture in Japan. It is in the Chbu region of the country. A prefecture called Nagano has a population of 2,052,493 (as of 1 June 2019) and a land area of 13,561 square miles (5,236 sq mi). To the north, Nagano Prefecture is bordered by Niigata Prefecture. To the northeast, it is bordered by Gunma Prefecture, to the east by Saitama Prefecture, to the southeast by Yamanashi Prefecture, and to the south by Shizuoka Prefecture, Aichi Prefecture, and Toyama Prefecture. In Nagano Prefecture, the capital and largest city is Nagano. Matsumoto, Ueda, and Iida are some of the other big cities there, as well. Most of the Hida Mountains, Kiso Mountains, and Akaishi Mountains are in Nagano Prefecture, but they also go into the neighbouring prefectures. Nagano Prefecture has been known as a world-class winter sports destination because of its many mountain ranges, natural beauty, and rich history. This includes hosting the 1998 Winter Olympics and a new Shinkansen line to Tokyo.
