About Aqaba
Aqaba is Jordan's sole coastal city and the Gulf of Aqaba's biggest and most populated city. Aqaba is the administrative capital of the Aqaba Governorate in southern Jordan. In 2015, the city's population was 148,398 and it had a land area of 375 square kilometres (144.8 sq mi). Today, Aqaba is critical to Jordan's economic growth, owing to its thriving commerce and tourist industries. Additionally, the Port of Aqaba serves many other nations in the area.
Aqaba's strategic position on the Red Sea's northeastern point, sandwiched between the continents of Asia and Africa, has made the port significant for thousands of years.
Elath was the ancient city's name, which was shortened to Aela in Latin and Ayla in Arabic. It was a regional centre for copper production and commerce during the Chalcolithic era due to its strategic position and closeness to copper mines. Aela became a bishopric under Byzantine authority and then became a Latin Catholic titular see after the invasion of the region by the Muslims about AD 650, when it was renamed Ayla; the name Aqaba dates from the late mediaeval period. The Battle of Aqaba during the Great Arab Revolt, as represented in the film Lawrence of Arabia, culminated in an Arab triumph against the Ottoman defenders.
Aqaba's proximity to Wadi Rum and Petra has positioned it inside Jordan's golden triangle of tourism, enhancing the city's global profile and elevating it to one of the country's top tourist destinations. The city is controlled by the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, which has transformed Aqaba into a duty-free, low-tax city, attracting major megaprojects such as Ayla Oasis, Saraya Aqaba, Marsa Zayed, and the extension of the Port of Aqaba. They are anticipated to transform the city into a regional tourist powerhouse. Industrial and commercial operations, on the other hand, continue to be significant, owing to the city's vital position as the country's only harbour. The city is located just over the border from Eilat, Israel's only Red Sea port. Following the 1994 Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty, there were aspirations and plans for the establishment of a trans-border tourist and commercial zone, but few of those ideas have materialised.
