About Irbid
Irbid, once known as Arabella or Arbela (in Ancient Greek), is the governorate's capital and biggest city. Additionally, it is Jordan's second biggest metropolitan area, after Amman, with a population of around 1,911,600. Irbid is situated around 70 kilometres (43 miles) north of Amman on the Gilead's northern crest, halfway between Pella, Beit Ras (Capitolias), and Um Qais, and about 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of the Syrian border.
Irbid was constructed over the ruins of numerous Early Bronze Age communities and was perhaps the biblical Beth Arbel and the Arbila of the Decapolis, a Hellenistic league dating from the first to second centuries BCE. Irbid's population grew significantly in the late nineteenth century, and before to 1948, it was a key transit commerce hub.
Irbid is Jordan's second biggest urban area, behind Amman. However, Irbid is the third biggest city in Jordan, behind Amman and Az Zarqa. Irbid Governorate province has the kingdom's second biggest population and the greatest population density.
The city serves as a vital ground transportation centre between Amman, Syria, and Mafraq, Iraq.
Additionally, the Irbid area is home to a number of institutions and universities. Jordan University of Science and Technology and Yarmouk University are the two most renowned universities.
