Ghana Postal Code

Ghana implemented postal codes on 18 October 2017 in association with the introduction of the National Digital Address System. The Digital Address System, a joint venture between Ghana Post (with help from the Ghanaian government) and Vokacom Ltd as GhanaPost GPS, allocated postal codes and unique addresses to each square in Ghana.

Ghana uses alphanumeric postal codes. The first two letters comprise the postcode district; the first letter indicates the area, while the second character indicates the district in which the address is situated. The following three to five numbers denote the postal district and provide a more accurate location within the district.

The postal code is comprised of the postcode district and postcode area. For instance, in Accra, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park & Mausoleum is located under postal code GA184, where GA denotes the postcode district - G for the Greater Accra Region and A for the Accra Metropolitan District - and 184 denotes the postcode area.

GA107, EO1070, and N503074 are all examples of postal codes.

Ghana Postal Format
Postal codes are alphanumeric in nature and vary in length between five and seven characters. In general, five-digit postal codes correspond to metropolitan districts and large urban regions, six-digit postal codes correspond to municipal districts and peri-urban areas, and seven-digit postal codes correspond to ordinary districts and small towns.

Each postal code is comprised of two distinct sections: the postcode district and the postcode region. Each postcode district's centre is located within the district capital and is recognised as postcode area "000." Postal code GA000, for example, marks the heart of postcode district GA inside Accra, the district headquarters of the Accra Metropolitan region, and corresponds to the 5-meter square area surrounding the Jubilee House.

Postcode areas are consecutively assigned numbers and spiral out anticlockwise from the postcode district's centre, with subsequent postcode areas 500 metres apart.

 For example, postal code GA008, which corresponds to the region around Accra's 37 Military Hospital, is 500 metres from GA009, implying proximity to the district's heart - and hence to postal code GA000.
