Jamaica now has 304 postal codes, with one- and two-digit sector numbers being used only in Kingston, the country's capital.

On June 6, 2005, a plan to implement a postcode system was originally unveiled. This aimed to aid the Jamaican Postal Corporation's overseas partners in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada in sorting letters addressed to Jamaica that wound up in Japan or Jamaica on Long Island in the United States.

However, despite suggestions in the Sunday Observer in 2006 that it would be ready for implementation by the end of that year, the system was never implemented, since plans to launch it in Kingston in July 2005 were shelved due to public confusion over the system.

On February 12, 2007, the postcode project was declared to be discontinued indefinitely.

The codes were intended to be alphanumeric in nature, with the following format: JMAPPNN, where
JM is the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code
A is a letter for one of four zones
PP are two letters for a parish
NN is a two-digit number for a post office
