New Zealand Postal Code

New Zealand Postal Code

New Zealand's current postcode system was implemented in June 2006, and it will apply to all postal items effective from June 2008, unlike the previous design. In October 2008, New Zealand Post dispatched a "remember your postcode" competition, offering a NZ$10,000 prize for remembering a zip code. The last two digits show one of the four methods of transport in cities and major settlements.
In the earlier system, introduced in 1977, New Zealand Post did not require individual mail items to include a postcode in the address. Optical character recognition (OCR) allowed automated sorting machines to scan entire addresses rather than just postcodes, as before. This is comparable to Ireland's situation. In 1992, OCR technology was introduced; at the time, most of the mail was handled manually in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch Mail Centres, owing to the installation of the first seven OCR machines.

New Zealand postal code format

The first two digits of New Zealand's postcodes indicate the area of delivery, with the third digit representing the type of delivery (street, PO Box, Private Bag, or Rural delivery) and the fourth denoting the lobby.

New Zealand postal code example
Between the town/city and the postcode, there are just one or two spaces, for example, Auckland 1112. Christchurch 8110.

Allocation
There are more than 18,000 postcodes in New Zealand. Each may cover up to 10,000 distinct locations. The north is generally assigned first.
