Jordan has a five-digit postal code, with the first two digits indicating the province and the final three digits indicating the post office. Jordan Post is the government entity in responsibility of this postal service.
The first government-run postal service was founded in 1921, shortly after the Emirate of Transjordan was created. It was given the name Mail Department and began by taking over the Ottoman Empire's postal operations. In 1921, the postal service began with eight post offices.
